About the Song
Robb first rec this song on his 1993 album with Pip Collings entitled "Heart's Desire", released on Irregular Records. Robb also recorded it on his 2024 "Pennypot Lane" album also on Irregular Records.
As with a number of Robb's compositions, the song became more widely known through the recording and performances of Roy Bailey. Martin Simpson accompanies Bailey on guitar on Bailey's 2005 "Sit Down & Sing" album.
In the 2019 video above, Simpson talks about his father-in-law Roy Bailey's life and work and the end of his life and how these were the last words Bailey sang before he died. Simpson, says that he was visiting Bailey often during the last month of his life. As far as he knew Bailey was completely unconscious. But during one of his last visits he opened his eyes and sang the last verse of this song (the last time Roy ever sang anything).
Consider the little of life that we know
We bring nothing, take nohting, pass through & go
We're all of us poor when it comes to the night
In need of the darkness, in need of the light
If we learned to want less & love more
There's be enough for the poor
'Cause there's more than enough for us all.

Note: For US listeners, an MP is a Member of Parliament. "Nurseries" in the UK are what are called "childcare centers" in the US.
Kowalski recorded the song for one of his online guitar workshops in part to teach the brilliant guitar accompaniment that Martin Simpson provided for Bailey's recording of the song.
