About the Song

This song was first recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943 on Decca Records (with "Danny Boy" as the B-side). It immediately became a Christmas standard.

The song is written as a letter being sent home by a GI to his/her family describing all the things they are longing for. The final line has a poignant sense of the possibility that the GI will never come home.

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the lovelight gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
