The song is reported to be based on the true story of a doctor named Don Morrow who reportedly lost his job for hugging his patient in a psychiatric hospital.
There has been some confusion between the Morrow described in this song and Hunter Doherty "Patch" Adams, a physician whose story was caricatured in the Robin Williams 1998 film. Dr Adams did not apparently appreciate the film.
