Wikipedia says this song was originally composed by 1911 and it was first recorded by Henry Thomas in 1928.

Taj Mahal credits this song as being "from the library of Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas. Mahal and many other artists have extensivey adapted this song. The lyrics in Rise Again are credited to and copyrighted by Taj Mahal. Mahal recorded the song on his 1969 "Giant Step" album.
