About the Song
We are a patchwork quilt
Many colors, from many shores
We keep our own ways,
But together we make so much more.

"David wrote this 4-part round as a musical way to explain the central idea of our 'Common Threads' thematic program. The theme of this program is multiculturalism and diversity, and the title comes from a wonderful song 'Common Thread' by Pat Humphries, which was inspired in turn (we believe) by a Jesse Jackson speech in which he said something like 'This country is like a patchwork quilt—many colors, many styles, many patterns—but all stitched together by a common thread.'
"We like the patchwork quilt metaphor for the combination of diversity and community, and that is partly why we wear patchwork quilted vests, made by David's mother Esther Heitler."
