This song comes from St Helena's island. It was first published in Ruth Crawford Seeger's 1953 collection, American Folksongs for Christmas. In that version the song only had one verse. The songs were transcribed by her from field recordings in the Library of Congress.
Later covers of the song add additional verses as they appear in Rise Again.
