About the Song

Steppin' Out is a jazz standard written in 1947 by Irving Berlin. Dinah Shore made the first recording with the Four Hits Orchestra under the direction of Sonny Burke in 1948.

The first theatrical release was by Fred Astaire in his musical Easter Parade (which co-starred Judy Garland). Astaire danced the song on a flight of stairs joined by 3 different partners. Astaire included it on his 1952 The Astraire Story album.

Doris Day recorded it on her 1959 Cuttin' Capers album.

It later became a classic in Tony Bennett's repertoire. It was the title track of his 1993 Astaire-themed album. He performed and/or recorded the song with Christina Aguilera, Michael Bublé & others.

Steppin' out with my baby
Can't go wrong 'cause I'm in right
It's for sure, not for maybe
That I'm all dressed up tonight

Steppin' out with my honey
Can't be bad to feel so good
Never felt quite so sunny
And I keep on knockin' wood

(bridge) There'll be smooth sailin' 'cause I'm trimmin' my sails
In my top hat and my white tie and my tails

Steppin' out with my baby
Can't go wrong 'cause I'm in right
Ask me when will the day be
The big day may be tonight

If I seem to scintillate
It's because I've got a date
A date with a package of
The good things that come with love
You don't have to ask me
I won't waste your time
But if you should ask me
Why I feel sublime
