About the Song

Was released as the B-side of their 1968 single "Mrs. Robinson" and on their "Bookends" LP in the same year.

The song is paired on the album and in many of their performances with the song "Bookends":

Time it was,
And what a time it was
It was . . .
A time of innocence
A time of confidences

Long ago . . . it must be . . .
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you

These 2 songs were one of the encores at their 1981 benefit concert for Central Park in New York City - which was attended by an estimated half million people. This is shown in the 2nd video below.

The 3rd video is from their Old Friend-Live on Stage tour in 2003.

The 4th video shows Simon & Garfunkel with Charles ("Chuck") Grodin the producer for Simon's 1977 TV special. Some of the dialog of them rehearsing may be a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that Simon & Garfunkel's actual working relationship was apparently not an easy one.
