About the Song
This song was written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon-McCartney. It was recorded in 1969 & released in 1970 on the "Let It Be" album.
Paul as well as many crtics were severely critical of Phil Spector's orchestral overdubbing of this song considering it at the least cloying and at worst unlistenable. At the High Court hearing around the breakup of the band Paul cited Spector's treatment of this song as one justification for the group's breakup.
He says he wrote the song in 1968 on and about High Park Farm, a property he acquired in 1966 near Campbeltown, Scotland.
The long & winding roadThat leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door
The wild & windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way
Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Anyway, you'll never know
The many ways I've tried
And still they lead me back
To the long winding road...
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road...
