About the Song

This song was collected in the 1930's from Anita Bergere in Santa Fe, NM and was published in Spanish American Folk Songs of New Mexico by the WPA Federal Music Project. It has been suggested that it is of Basque origin and goes back to the 16th century, but the current lyrics at least are in Spanish rather than in Basque (Euskera).
