About the Song

Down to the River to Pray is a traditional gospel song with roots in Appalachia. It has been covered many times by a wide variety of musical ensembles of many genres including old-timey, country and bluegrass.

It is one of the traditional songs featured in the Coen Brothers' film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" in a scene where a large choir dressed in white robes is moving down to a river for a baptism.
