De Geyter (1848-1932) was a Belgian socialist and composer who composed a new tune to Eugene Pottier's lyrics to "The Internationale" which was originally intended to be sung to the French national anthem, "La Marseilles". This setting to Pottier's lyrics was composed in 1888 at the request of Gustave Delory, the socialist leader of Lille. De Geyter's setting turned out to be the standard tune for the song which was subsequently translated into many, many different languages.
