Kerr (1860-1944) was the song of abolitiionist parents who emigrated to Chicago from Georgia at the outset of the US Civil War. He became a pubisher of Unitarian, socialist, and anarchist literature. He wrote a singable English translation to "The Internationale", the great anthem of socialists and unionists around the world. His is the setting usually sung in the U.S.A
